Have flag, will travel
Debbie Laurie vividly remembers the Terry Fox telethon in 1980, held just one week after Terry was forced to stop running. Host Lloyd Robertson challenged Canadians to go out into their communities to do something spontaneous. Right then and there, 13-year-old Debbie promised herself – and Terry – that she’d share his story as often as she could. She’s spent the last 45 years fulfilling that promise.
She’s participated in every Terry Fox Run. As a teacher, she taught generations of students about Terry and his values. Now, as a world traveler, she doesn’t leave home without her Terry Fox flag. On a recent trip to Australia, someone on the tour asked about the flag. Debbie stood up and told the entire bus about Terry. Her fellow passengers were so moved, they took up a collection and raised $150!
Debbie has spent her life honouring the promise she made to Terry. And we’re deeply honoured she has included the Terry Fox Foundation in her will…so she can continue fulfilling that promise for generations to come.

Terry Fox brought Canadians together. So does the Air Canada Foundation. And we’re grateful to them for helping us share Terry’s story across Canada and around the world.
Last year, the Air Canada Foundation provided flights that allowed Fred Fox to talk about Terry’s legacy with more than 30,000 students in 79 schools across 7 provinces. They also donated tickets to fly our Wrexham contest winners across the pond to enjoy the first-ever Wrexham Terry Fox Run and a unique Canadian Thanksgiving in Wales.
More recently, they flew retired Canadian hockey and football stars to Dubai for a series of fundraisers called “Canada Week in Dubai.” The fundraisers included a hockey tournament, a golf tournament, and a Terry Fox Run. In all, the participants raised $26,000 for the Al Jalila Foundation, a beacon for medical innovation in the United Arab Emirates and beyond.
